I've been self-employed most of my working life. The one and only job I've ever had was the one I found after graduating from college.
It was not a typical job, and taught me a lot about using technology to leapfrog over the competition.
I was employed by a large retail store, and the owners were very focused on constantly improving their customer relations. Every new piece of technology that came out was studied and tested to see if it could be of use. The stuff we liked was put into place immediately.
We developed custom hardware and software systems to run the whole business, from the sales floor to the office to the warehouse.
Every system we built had one mission - to help the employees work faster with greater accuracy to improve the customer experience. With these systems we could keep costs lower (which kept prices lower), deliver orders faster, and fill orders more accurately.
As a result, that store is the largest of its kind anywhere, and attracts customers from all over the world based solely on its reputation.
That started in 1993. By 1996 I decided to head out and become a programming consultant. Everything I learned from that job I apply to all the work I do now. I never build software without considering how the software will move the entire business further toward its goals.
Every piece of software directly affects the performance of the business, and the performance of the business directly affects the customers. So every piece of software must be designed with the customer in mind.
